Background of the Study
Cross-border conflicts have been a significant challenge to national security in Nigeria, particularly in regions where borders are porous and neighboring countries experience instability. Illela Local Government Area (LGA) in Sokoto State, located along Nigeria’s border with Niger Republic, has been increasingly affected by cross-border conflicts, particularly in the form of armed banditry, smuggling, and trafficking. These cross-border issues often spill over into Nigeria, creating insecurity in local communities and disrupting the daily lives of residents (Bello & Usman, 2024).
The porous nature of the border between Nigeria and Niger has facilitated the movement of armed groups, which engage in attacks on local communities, kidnapping for ransom, and other criminal activities. This insecurity has affected economic activities such as farming, trade, and education, creating an environment of fear and distrust. Local security agencies, though working to curb the violence, often face challenges in tackling cross-border crimes due to inadequate resources and coordination with security agencies in neighboring countries.
This study investigates the impact of cross-border conflicts on local security in Illela LGA, examining how these conflicts have affected the safety of local residents and the broader implications for the socio-economic stability of the area.
Statement of the Problem
Cross-border conflicts in Illela LGA have created severe security challenges, including the proliferation of criminal activities and displacement of residents. Despite efforts to secure the border, the flow of armed groups and illicit activities continues to undermine local security. This study aims to assess the impact of these cross-border conflicts on local security and propose measures for improving security coordination between Nigeria and neighboring countries.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the impact of cross-border conflicts on local security in Illela LGA.
To identify the key drivers of cross-border conflicts affecting security in Illela LGA.
To propose strategies for improving local security in Illela LGA in the context of cross-border conflicts.
Research Questions
How do cross-border conflicts affect local security in Illela LGA?
What are the main drivers of cross-border conflicts in Illela LGA?
What strategies can be implemented to improve local security in Illela LGA?
Research Hypotheses
Cross-border conflicts have significantly worsened local security in Illela LGA by facilitating criminal activities and displacement.
The porous border and inadequate security cooperation between Nigeria and Niger Republic are the main drivers of cross-border conflicts in Illela.
Strengthening security cooperation, improving border monitoring, and increasing community vigilance will improve local security in Illela LGA.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the impact of cross-border conflicts on local security in Illela LGA, Sokoto State, . Limitations include potential difficulties in accessing conflict zones due to security concerns and the challenges of obtaining cooperation from cross-border security agencies.
